Argentinian striker Leo Messi has torn fibres in the biceps of his right leg and, according to the Club Medical Services, is likely to be out for about a month.
The seriousness of the injury that led to Messi withdrawing from the field against Chelsea on Tuesday has been revealed. Following clinical testing and ecography, it has been announced that the player will not be playing first team football for at least 4 or 6 weeks. Doctor LluÃs Til has said that the breakage is about four centimetres long.
Recovery programme
The first stage of the recovery process will involve bringing the swelling down and relaxation of the muscles in the injured area in order for the torn muscle to start healing. Then, to get back to action as soon as possible, Messi will then have to work on getting the muscles moving properly again.
Messi's sorrow
After learning just how bad the injury is, Messi told Barça TV that he is "feeling upset after having to leave the field early in such an important game".
One of the images that will stick in the mind was the way Frank Rijkaard hugged Messi as the player made his forlorn way back to the dressing rooms, and Messi showed his gratitude to his coach and the rest of the players for their support.
Speaking about the ordeal that awaits him, Messi said "I hope to be back in a month, but I don't want to overdo things".
How it happened
Messi went on to describe how the injury had happened, saying "in a collision with Gallas I felt the first tang of pain." He did not leave the pitch straight away, but following another move involving Robben "I realised that I could not continue".
