Blackburn 1 Arsenal 0
Date: 26-02-2006 14:31
Blackburn are by no means the first side to expose and exploit the frailty of the current Arsenal side at domestic level. This was their eighth away defeat in the league and their 10th in all. They have been especially vulnerable in this part of the land and might not have been surprised to learn that, in fact, Nelson, a tiny outfit just up the road from Blackburn, were the first club from England to beat Madrid on their home ground, 4-2 in the summer of 1923.

A goal by Morten Gamst Pedersen, brilliantly fashioned by Craig Bellamy, was enough to settle this match, although Blackburn might have sealed Arsenal's fate by half-time. Their failure to do so encouraged Arsenal to believe they could retrieve some self-respect and, but for three appalling misses, they would have done so. The introduction of
Aleksander Hleb ignited a sense of purpose and urgency lacking in their play through the first half.
Arsenal's abject performance in that period posed the question - just how bad are Real Madrid? Blackburn displayed the three key elements absent from the Spaniards' game: organisation at the back, commitment in midfield and pace up front.
Thierry Henry, imperious and destructive against Madrid, was a peripheral figure, unable to find the space he relishes and conspicuously reluctant to engage in any 50-50 challenge. Occasional performers have no place in Mark Hughes's team, who now stand above Arsenal in the queue for the fourth Champions League place.

Arsenal arrived here buoyed by their 1-0 victory at the Bernabeu and doubtless conscious of their dominance over Blackburn in recent history. They had won the six previous meetings between the teams, while Blackburn had failed to score since their last success, almost three years ago.

But then Blackburn have developed apace this season, the mood of optimism reflected not only in results but openly declared aspirations. Hughes admits even his own players exchanged disbelieving glances when he set them a target of European qualification at the start of the season.

Now they feel they are credible contenders for the Champions League, let alone the UEFA Cup.

Arsenal began as if intent on strutting their stuff but found non-nonsense defender Andy Todd blocking their way. Far from resorting to strong-arm tactics, however, Blackburn endeavoured to take on Arsenal at their own passing game and might have made more of their early possession. Bellamy could not contain his exasperation as the final ball was delivered too late, yet soon took out his frustration on Arsenal and set up Blackburn's goal in the 18th minute.

The Welsh striker left Philippe Senderos floundering with a burst of speed. He then had the composure to lay the ball into the path of Pedersen, who scored from close range. It was the Norwegian's last contribution. He seemed to strain his hamstring in the process and had to be replaced by Sergio Peter.
With Senderos on the field. Arsenal looked vulnerable at the back and yet, when he was off the field receiving treatment, they could have conceded two more goals.

Todd headed over and Robbie Savage followed the same route when he swung at the ball in the goalmouth. On the stroke of half-time, Todd stopped Jose Antonio Reyes in his tracks and the Spaniard gave way to Robert Pires for the second half.
Jens Lehmann, warned for a familiar tantrum, was subsequently booked for pushing over Steven Reid before Arsenal at last summoned a meaningful response.
