Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson made an 11th-hour bid to force the FA to pull Wayne Rooney out of Thursday's game against Trinidad & Tobago and the World Cup.
British media reports say Rooney's club sent a strongly-worded letter to the England camp in Nuremburg before their second Group B encounter which stated the 20-year-old striker was not fit and would not be fit at any time during the tournament.
Rooney - who was cleared to play by two independent medical experts after breaking a bone in his foot in late April - came on for Michael Owen just before the hour mark of the 2-0 win which sealed England's progress to the knockout phase.
And the former Everton player was said to be furious with his own club's attempts to scupper his plans to play for his country, which could strain his relations with Ferguson.
The United supremo has been fighting a losing battle to prevent his prize asset from playing in Germany after Rooney fractured a metatarsal in a Premiership game against Chelsea, with Ferguson concerned about the repercussions for his club should the injury not be fully healed or reoccur.
